Breaking the habit of being hard on yourself

Writer's picture: Jennifer MacDonaldJennifer MacDonald

Are you in the habit of being hard on yourself?

When you encounter a roadblock in a project or discover you’ve made a mistake, what is your response?

Too often, we automatically berate ourselves for not doing it right the first time or for not magically preventing any and all issues that stand in our way.

In other words, we get mad at ourselves for being human.

Here are 3 tips to create a new habit of self-compassion:

1. The next time you hit a bump in the road, gently notice your automatic thoughts without judgment.

2. Ask yourself – would you say these things to a dear friend?

3. If the answer is ‘no’, take 2 minutes and write down what you would say instead. Practice saying these kind words to yourself.

We all have automatic negative thoughts.

We all have the power to shift them to kind, affirming thoughts.
